The greatest scene in all animated movie history.
Yay for gender tropes and vague racism?
You beat me to it. So here we meet Pixar’s only black people. A vague stereotype of African-American marriage where the woman is hard headed and controlling and so domineering over the now emasculated man that just her angry voice creates a pall over the rest of the scene. We don’t need to see her. The man just wants to DO things but is thwarted by his ever demanding wife. See, he wants to save the world, but she’s more concerned about her stupid little dinner that she’s been planning and he couldn’t be less concerned about attending.
This scene could’ve played out any number of different ways. Seriously, any number. Instead they go for sitcom tropesville. It’s bad enough, but if Disney (and in this case SPECIFICALLY Pixar) had any history with doing Black characters well and had a long list of Black characters with a wide variety of personalities this wouldn’t be a problem. It’s context. This is all we get from Pixar and it’s rather lacking in substance.
